Equipment

Ellwood uses Scott SCBAs (airpaks).   The 35 units that Ellwood owns are used by firefighters whenever they expect to encounter a hazardous condition.  In addition, each pumper and aerial truck is equipped with an air system for the driver to use in the event that the truck is positioned in a hazardous situation.

Each airpack has an integral PASS device which is set when a firefighter is entering a building.  These units send out a piercing whistle when a member has not moved for a short period of time and allow rescuers to find a fallen firefighter by tracing the sound.

Ellwood has a thermal imaging camera which is used to find hidden fires or victims very quickly.  This device was obtained through a grant from the Erie County Legislature.  County Legislators Lynn Marinelli and Chuck Swanick were instrumental in helping Ellwood obtain this grant.

Apparatus

Ellwood has a goal of maintaining their equipment so that it can provide top performance in the event of an emergency.  Weekly safety and operation tests are performed on each piece of equipment.  The Board of Fire Commissioners has a goal of replacing apparatus when it reaches 20 years of age to minimize repairs while also minimizing the cost of equipment replacement.

The Current apparatus is listed below.  Click on the picture of each piece of apparatus to see it in full size.
